Fall drills officially began this week for the Clinton Arrows football team.
The Arrows have been working out in shorts this week and will don full pads starting August 11. Clinton High opens the season on August 22 at Pearl. The first home game at Arrow Field will be August 29 when the Arrows host Ridgeland.
The annual “Meet the Arrows Night Ice Cream Social” will be Thursday August 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Arrow Field. Players from fall sports, both girls and boys teams, will be introduced following the ice cream serving. Tentative plans are for the Arrows to have an inner squad scrimmage game immediately following the ice cream social.
Unlike the in the past, teams no longer begin fall drills with 2 or 3 a day practice sessions. CHS worked out this past week in two-hour sessions daily in the afternoon in compliance with new MHSAA regulations regarding fall pre-season practices.
Workouts now are all summer long, with weight lifting and 7 on 7 drills. In years past, there were often surprises about players not returning or dropping out when fall drills opened back up in August. Now with year-round workouts, that no longer is the case.
“We have 75 to 80 out there, and there were no surprises this week when we came back,” said Arrows head coach Judd Boswell. “These guys have worked so hard in the offseason spring and summer. We know what we have, and we are working hard to get ready for Pearl in the season opener.”
"This is the best team chemistry we’ve had since I have been at Clinton. Last year was a tough year, but we were playing a lot of ninth and 10th- graders against a tough 6A schedule. They’ve been through a lot and gotten a lot stronger and better since last fall.”
"Every game is going to be a battle this year, but we look forward to the challenge. We’ve got a chance to have a very good year if we can stay healthy,” said Boswell.
